The Pirate Kingdom of Oppolus
The kingdom of Oppolus was “founded” by the mythical pirate, Torlin Greybeard. He led a very successful career as a pirate and amassed a great fortune and even had his own navy. The island of Oppolus had always been considered a dense uninhabitable jungle and so no other nation had had any reason to take it. Torlin decided to make it his island and so took all of his men and all of his ships set about cultivating the island. His men were completely loyal to him and he promised them something they had never hoped to have, a home. He delivered. Though his men never were able to establish any sort of town in the heart of the island they were successful in setting up a large number of towns on the coast. The nation prospered and the people were happy. But would it remain this way after the death of their glorious leader? In the twilight hours of his life Torlin set about trying to find a solution to this problem. He had no children so his line could not continue on, and he trusted no one to rule so fairly as he. He stumbled upon to a strange form of government that had never been tried before, democracy. He proposed this idea and suggested that he and the other most powerful and influential leaders on the island set about creating a form of government based on this philosophy. They agreed, it was similar to the system many of them used on their ships were every man got a share of the treasure and every man got a say in what was done. The idea was finalized and presented to the population who accepted it gladly. Elections were held and Torlin was elected as the leader. When his term was up he stepped aside and let someone else take over. And so did it go for a long time. However after Torlin’s death the leaders began to turn more and more towards piracy again. Torlin had abandoned piracy as a means of survival and instead set about transforming his navy into a trade navy. His followers kept this idea in a way but largely worked to endorse piracy and to be a safe haven for pirates. Since they had to most powerful navy in the World they did not need to fear attacks by other nations. But just to be sure they tried to keep the acts of piracy committed from getting out of hand. They did not always succeed. Slowly the government became more and more corrupt, and while the idea of democracy was still believed in and practiced, every now and then a pirate would gather a large force and instate themselves as a ruler of one of the towns. Very rarely was a major city taken this way but it did happen from time to time. The office of the Pirate King was held as being above such brutishness though and so that office is still elected fairly.
